In physics, reflection is the change in direction of a wavefront at an interface between two different media. It causes the wavefront to return into the medium from which it originated.  

Key Concepts:

  • Law of Reflection:
    • The angle of incidence is the angle between the incoming wave and the normal to the surface. It is equal to the angle of reflection, which is the angle between the reflected wave and the normal.  
    • The incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal to the surface intersect at a point of incidence. They all lie in the same plane.

Types of Reflection:

  • Specular Reflection: Occurs when a wave is reflected from a smooth surface, such as a mirror. The reflected rays are parallel to each other.
  • Diffuse Reflection: Occurs when a wave is reflected from a rough surface. The reflected rays are scattered in many directions.

Examples of Reflection:

  • Light reflecting from a mirror: This is a classic example of specular reflection.
  • Sound waves reflecting off a wall: This can create an echo.
  • Water waves reflecting off a barrier: The waves bounce back and change direction.

Applications of Reflection:

  • Mirrors: Used for personal grooming, in telescopes and microscopes, and in various optical instruments.
  • Radar: Uses the reflection of radio waves to detect objects.
  • Sonar: Uses the reflection of sound waves to detect objects underwater.
  • Optical fibers: Utilize the principle of total internal reflection to transmit light over long distances.

In essence, reflection is a fundamental concept in physics. It describes the behavior of waves when they encounter a boundary between two different media.
